Sarajevo survives war - Siege tour

Want to hear the story about longest seige of the capital city in modern history? Watch the city from positions that were held by snipers and tanks? See Tunnel of Hope? Joiun our Sarajevo survives war – Seige tiur!

  • The siege of Sarajevo by the Serbian aggressor began with the seizure of the international airport by the JNA, on the night of April 4-5, 1992, and ended on February 29, 1996. It was an almost four-year blockade of the capital, called the “Siege of Sarajevo”, lasting 1,425 days, one of the longest in the history of modern warfare.
  • After the “Berlin Airlift”, this was the “longest” airlift in the history of world aviation.
  • During its “duration”, over ten thousand planes landed and took off from the airport, delivering humanitarian aid and taking wounded civilians for treatment. The air bridge itself, according to UNHCR data, was not enough to deliver food to the population of BiH. But if anything could be said to be safe at all, it proved to be the safest. While the convoys were standing still, stopped by misunderstandings with commanders on the ground, conflicts, or weather conditions, an average of 20-25 planes landed at the Sarajevo airport a day, which means ten tons of food per flight.
  • Ninety percent of aid to Sarajevo arrived by air. During the siege, an average of 329 shells per day fell on Sarajevo, and this city has a specific record. Namely, it is a record of 3,777 shells fired at Sarajevo in one day. It happened on July 22, 1993. The shells caused enormous damage, and civilian, cultural, and religious buildings suffered the most damage. People were killed, and civil, cultural, and religious buildings and even hospitals were demolished. 120 mortars and 250 JNA tanks were stationed in the hills around Sarajevo, which later fell into the hands of the Republika Srpska army. Their goal was torture by hunger and demoralization of the population in the most cruel ways.
  • A terrible example is the massacre at the open market of Markale when in February 1994, shells fired from Serbian positions on the Pointed Rock hit a crowd of people and took the lives of 68 Sarajevo citizens. During the siege of Sarajevo, 12,000 people were killed, among them 1,500 children, and 50,000 people were lightly and seriously wounded.
